“Help! I’m a leader, what should I do to improve communication in my team?”

2 Oct 2024

At The WayFinders Group, we believe that it is possible to create a culture of openness. For us, excellence and empathy go hand in hand. We remain committed to excellence whilst also demonstrating empathy as we communicate with one another.

Here’s how we do it internally:

📢 Model vulnerability

Taking time to share how you feel without trying to control how the other person will respond creates space for vulnerability. Communication here has to be two-way, and sometimes being shown how to do something unlocks a path forwards. We encourage each other to be leaders with the courage to ask for help and the conviction to say when you don’t have what you need to achieve something.

🔎 Create space for diverse perspectives

There is room at the table for everyone. The more diverse the table, the more the team thrives in creativity, experimentation, and innovation. A leader sets the tone for transparency and inclusivity. But having people around the table isn’t really enough. You have to create space for diverse perspectives to be heard, to feel valued, and to feel welcome so that they stay at the table.

🌱 Embrace conflict as a path to growth

Conflict is not a bad word. A responsible leader learns to navigate through it. Conflict enables them to take their team to a place of reconciliation and change.

Improving communication in your team is not a tick-box exercise. It is a vital part of investing in yourself, your people, and your collective future.

What are your thoughts on how to improve communication with your team? How have you impacted your team’s development and growth? 💬
